Closet Concepts

The biggest advantage to my old apartment, was the space in my closet. I could see everything that I had, all in one place. I tend to be a very visual person, and know that the truth of the matter is, if I don't see it, I probably won't wear it. With all of my clothes in one place and easy to view, I had no problem putting together outfits each week, and laying out combinations for future wear. In the new place however many of my clothes find homes in different sections of the room, and in some cases in drawers. To help me better utilize the items I have, I decided to start my own little on-going art project. I am not an artist. In fact often times my stick figures lean to one side, but what I can do is color in the lines. I started by googling the terms, ' Fashion Sketch Template'. I was originally looking for a sketch book that had some figures outlined, but in the end I found the image above. From there I copied and pasted the image twice, printed out my images and headed to the copier.

Often times, I come up with some great inspiration while I'm at work. I may be typing away on an order, when all of the sudden a great combination pops into my head. Because of this, I often keep a scrap piece of paper near-by so I can keep track of all of my rambling thoughts. Because I am such a visual person however, these outfits in word form do me no good early in the morning. Now I keep a folder with my blank ladies next to a box of Crayola Colored Pencils, Crayola Colored Crayons, a pencil, a pen and a fine tipped sharpie. As I'm catching up on the latest Real Housewives Drama or trying to sort through the next great Big Brother move, I doodle away on these ladies.

I try to come up with two outfits, for each item I focus on. My concept is that no matter what the weather, on a day when I just really want to wear that ' Yellow Top' for instance, I have some options. Plus, there should never be anything in my closet that I can't find at least two ways to wear it, thus creating an even better way to sort through the items that I won't be wearing.

With no artistic skills, I have been surprised at just how much I'm enjoying this creative outlet. Besides keeping my hands busy at night, it has made my mornings a cinch. Just when nothing is calling to me from without my closet walls I can flip through the pages and point to a great outfit. The best part? Starting this entire project cost me the price of a box of Crayola Crayons, and a box of Crayola Colored Pencils from my local drugstore. A great idea can't get any better than that.
