Unexpected Work Horse

Unexpected Work Horse

I am so astonished by how long this skirt has stuck around. I first purchased this 'skirt' a number of years ago at Target, but at that time it was actually a pair of pants. They functioned as a great pair of work pants and got a ton of wear during their first year, but then magically one day they shrunk. Unexpectedly and for no apparent reason they became uncomfortable high waters. They still fit great in the waist, so I decided that the best thing to do was to cut off the legs, and re-sew what was left into a skirt.

I've been sewing for most of my life, but I must admit, this project was a bit of a cob job. I didn't bother re-threading the bobbin so the thread I used is brown while the skirt is navy. Frankly this was a bit of a 'by the seat of my pants' ( pun intended ) project, so I never bothered to properly hem the bottom of the skirt. Instead I just folded and sewed as I went, so the hem is a bit uneven. I thought that this would be a skirt that would last through a wear or two, and that was over two years ago.

I love this skirt! It's first year as pants really helped to stretch out the fabric making this the most comfortable skirt I own. I went easy on it the first summer knowing that it wouldn't have much of a life, and only wear it a few times. Last summer I decided to get my fill and quickly turned this skirt into a work horse. I wore this skirt at least once every week last year, and still this skirt has stuck around. Finally this year the skirt is starting to show it's age. The hem is starting to fray, and the fabric on the butt of the skirt is starting to thin. I anticipate that I will be able to wear this skirt one or two more times before this skirt will need to be retired, but I thought that once before as well. This unexpected work horse has more then earned it's retirement.
